It starts with a love of music,
an appreciation of words,
and passionate communication,
and creative expression,
and the experience of having been inspired,
of having felt the magic
that sometimes gets created in live performance,
in the place where artists and audiences come together.

It grows – out of and into a sense of purpose;
to advocate on behalf of art, and spirit,
and the inspirational quality,
and with that comes a pledge –
to place and re-place the emphasis on essence and content,
and to create opportunities and environments that are richly rewarding,

Through the power of community,
and the energy of trust,
and a belief in the work and the vision,
and with the strength of stamina,
and the force of fulfillment,
it continues to expand.

Dave Alvin & The Guilty Ones

Since 1979, with his group The Blasters, and  throughout his long and critically acclaimed solo career, Dave Alvin has been a mainstay of contemporary roots music. In 2001, his Public Domain CD won the Grammy Award for Best Traditional Folk Album.

His songs have been recorded by the likes of Los Lobos, Little Milton, Joe Ely, Dwight Yoakam, James McMurtry and X, and have featured in many movies and television shows including The Sopranos, True Blood, The Wire, Six Feet Under, Crybaby, Miss Congeniality, From Dusk To Dawn, and Justified.

With seven performances at Tales from the Tavern, he’s definitely one of the core artists of our series and a member of the extended family. We’re thrilled to have Dave Alvin back with The Guilty Ones to close out the night at our first-ever Ya Ya Festival!

Ruthie Foster

Three-time Grammy nominee for Best Blues Album, seven Blues Music Awards, and Living Blues Critics’ Award for Female Artist of the Year are just some of the accolades that have come to Ruthie Foster since she left the Navy, where she played with the Navy band, Pride, but her greatest impact comes on stage, in what she calls “Hallelujah time!”

Raised in the small rural town of Gause, Tex., Ruthie moved to New York City, where she signed a deal with Atlantic Records, but she walked away from it when they tried to mold her into a pop star. She returned to Texas, and since then it’s been all heart and soul and inspiration.

She’s performed onstage with Bonnie Raitt, The Allman Broothers and Susan Tedeschi, and on her latest album, she’s joined by miusical greats Derek trucks, Willie Weeks and Joe Vitale.

We are stoked to welcome Ruthie Foster to the Santa Ynez Valley and to the Ya Ya Festival!

Michael On Fire

From his beginnings as a songwriter and artist with Groovesville Music at Detroit’s famed United Sound Studios, to his earliest recordings with the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section (“The Swampers”) at Muscle Shoals Sound, to his jazz explorations performing shows with Stanley Clarke, Jean Luc Ponty, McCoy Tyner, Mose Allison, and more, to his time in L.A. and Nashville, making records with Stephen Stills, Joe Vitale, Daniel Lazerus and other great producers and musicians, to his many years of non-stop touring through every nook and cranny of the country, and right on through to his newest two-album set, Michael On Fire has been relentless in his commitment to creative expression and musical performance. He is that rare breed that has lived his entire life uncompromisingly as a full-time artist, playing all original music.
He has 20 albums to his credit, and has also created music for film and television. His instrumental Enchanting Holiday Music was among the most played music on the Weather Channel for 14 consecutive years.
Maverick Magazine (UK), noted: “This is honest, rootsy music by a veteran artist who makes music on his own terms regardless of current fads and fancies,” which is true, and then it goes on to add, “We celebrate artists like that, especially when the music is of such uniformly high quality;” (so do we!)
It is our pleasure to present Michael On Fire at our first-ever Ya Ya Festival!

Steve Poltz

Steve Poltz is one of the greatest entertainers in the world – and that’s why he’s the only solo act on the mainstage this year; he’s the only one we could think of who could hold the energy! Besides that, he’s an ambassador of love and positivity and humor, all things that we wanted for this event.
Like Dave Alvin and Michael On Fire, he’s one of our core artists and a member of the extended family.
He is a total in-the-moment performer, and we are honored to kick off the Ya Ya Festival with Steve Poltz!
